Not By Their Name

by Zelma Harrison

They weep from within,

not daring to tell their shame

so if it’s known, it will not be by their name.

Each morning they awake to run and play,

hoping for a brighter day.

Then the night comes and they pray

that God will make a way

to endure the hurt, the pain deep inside,

that comes with each waking day.

Until then, they continue to weep from within

not daring to tell their shame

so if it’s known, it will not bear their name.
